To study theology is to study God, not necessarily to know God; it is to learn about and not necessarily to live out. But what value does a systematic knowledge of God have unless it shifts my understanding or relationship with God? I believe an intellectual pursuit of God is fruitless unless transforms what I care about, why I relate to others and ultimately, who I worship.

To know is not enough.

The study of theology finds it value after it leaves the page and works itself out in life. Understanding must be translated into action, knowledge into reverence, and concepts into conversations. Theology is not an opportunity to clarity the boundaries of my faith identity or the boxes by which God is defined. Rather, it is the articulation of my faith’s center and establishs the steps for me to move towards it.

salt season
somerville, ma | 8:57am EST

the salt came out today marking the season of salt. it will linger on my clothes, my boots, our kitchen floor, protecting us from slippery slopes. it will season our lives, our winter, giving us a richness in our daily chores.

whenever i curse winter, i shall remember the salt.

and its metaphors.
